Why intensity beats volume for its own sake
Volume, total reps and sets, matters, but it's a means, not the goal. The reason traditional programs lean on high volume is that a fixed weight can only be heavy enough at one point in the movement. To get a hard set, you pick a load light enough to lift many times, then repeat it again and again to make up for the fact that most of those reps were underloaded.
That works, but it's slow. Most of the time you spend lifting a sub-maximal weight is time the muscle isn't being maximally challenged. Your strength isn't constant through a rep. You're stronger in some joint angles than others, stronger lowering than lifting, and stronger at the start of a set than at the end.
